Op deze inmiddels wat verder gevorderde Zondagavond wil ik nog even afdwalen naar de krochten van de herinnering aan een van de conversaties die ik vandaag voerde... In gesprek met iemand die hier ook wel eens mee kijkt sinds kort, kwamen we al pratende op het heerschap Roman Abramovitsj... U weet wel die knettertje rijke Rus die van alles en nog wat met zijn dikke duiten op heeft gekocht en er nogal van houdt om met doekoe te smijten... Een slimme zakenman met veel geluk? Of is er meer aan de hand...???

Roman Arkadjevitsj Abramovitsj (Russisch: Роман Аркадьевич Абрамович) (Saratov (RSFSR, USSR), 24 oktober 1966) is een Russische olie-miljardair, die als een van de Russische oligarchen bekendstaat. Buiten Rusland is hij vooral bekend als eigenaar van de Engelse Premier League-voetbalclub Chelsea FC en binnen Rusland is hij bekend als mede-eigenaar van de Russische Premjer-Liga -voetbalclub CSKA Moskou. Hij is ook bekend door zijn exorbitante levensstijl. Hij verving na de Yukos-rechtszaak Michail Chodorkovski als de rijkste man van Rusland en stond in 2008 in Forbes genoteerd als 15e van de wereld met een geschat vermogen van 23,5 miljard dollar. Vervolgens werd hij voorbijgestreefd door Oleg Deripaska, maar in 2009 daalden de vermogens van de Russische miljardairs door de crisis sterk, waarbij Abramovitsj vermogen volgens Forbes kelderde tot 8,5 miljard, waarmee hij als tweede Rus staat genoteerd onder Michail Prochorov.

Jeugd

Abramovitsj verloor zijn moeder toen hij 18 maanden oud was. Zijn vader kwam later bij een bouwgeval om het leven, Abramovitsj was toen vier jaar oud. Geadopteerd door zijn oom van vaders zijde en opgevoed door zijn joodse familie in het ruwe milieu van de autonome republiek Komi in Noordwest-Rusland, heeft Abramovitsj ontbering in significant succes kunnen omzetten. Hij studeerde aan het industrieel instituut van Oechta, waarna hij dienst deed in het Rode Leger.

Sibneftperiode

Bij de privatisering van de staatsbedrijven van de voormalige Sovjet-Unie in 1995 kreeg Abramovitsj samen met Boris Berezovski een meerderheidsbelang in Sibneft, de derde oliemaatschappij van Rusland, gevestigd in Omsk. Deze aankoop wordt algemeen als oneerlijk gezien vanwege het lage bedrag dat ervoor betaald werd: door middel van drie staatsveilingen verkocht de overheid haar belang van 51% van de aandelen voor ongeveer 200 miljoen USD, terwijl de geschatte waarde vele malen hoger was. Berezovski verkocht zijn aandelen in 2000 aan Abramovitsj toen hij vanwege zijn politieke aspiraties plotseling te maken kreeg met aanklachten door de Russische staat en het land ontvluchtte. Later liet hij Abramovitsj aanklagen omdat hij destijds een te laag bedrag voor zijn aandelenpakket had gekregen.

Abramovitsj maakte er in het verleden geen geheim van dat hij graag zijn aandeel in Sibneft wilde verkopen om hierdoor zijn geld Rusland uit te krijgen en in zijn geliefde Verenigd Koninkrijk te gaan wonen, al was het alleen maar omdat hij vreesde dat hij na Chodorkovski zelf aan de beurt zou zijn.

In september 2005 verkocht Abramovitsj, via zijn holding Millhouse Capital, 72.7% van Sibneft voor 13,01 miljard dollar aan het door de Russische overheid gecontroleerde Gazprom. Dit was de grootste transactie in de Russische geschiedenis en de overheid sloot hiervoor met 12 miljard USD tevens de grootste lening in de Russische geschiedenis af. Eerder verkocht Abramovitsj al zijn aandelen in Aeroflot (Ruslands grootste luchtvaartmaatschappij), RusPromAvto (Ruslands grootste autobedrijf), RUSAL (Ruslands grootste aluminiumproducent, 2e grootste van de wereld) en nog een aantal andere bedrijven. Abramovitsj is naar eigen zeggen overigens niet van plan om Rusland de rug toe te keren. Hij heeft er nog diverse andere investeringen, een aantal liefdadigheidsinstellingen. In 2006 liet hij weten een aandeel te willen in de Evrazgroep.

Gouverneur van Tsjoekotka

Abramovitsj was van 2000 tot 2008 gouverneur van het Russische autonome district Tsjoekotka, waar hij ongeveer 2,5 miljard dollar (waarvan naar schatting 1,3 miljard dollar eigen geld) heeft geïnvesteerd in de economie, bevolking en publieke functies en waar Gazprom Neft (het voormalige Sibneft) ook een aantal aardgasvelden exploiteert. Hij bestuurde in het verleden overigens Tsjoekotka meestal niet zelf, maar liet dat aan zijn vertegenwoordiger in de regio over. In 2004 kwamen er vanuit het Kremlin beschuldigingen dat er gefraudeerd zou zijn met de gelden van de regio, waardoor de regio veel meer kostte dan opleverde aan belastingopbrengsten en daardoor eigenlijk failliet was. Bewijs dat Abramovitsj hierbij betrokken was werd echter niet geleverd. Abramovitsj verklaarde na de verkoop van Sibneft positief te staan tegenover een tweede termijn als gouverneur van Tsjoekotka, als Poetin hem wil benoemen, alhoewel hij eerder aangaf dit liever niet te willen, 'omdat het te veel geld kost'. In oktober werd hij inderdaad opnieuw benoemd voor een tweede termijn als gouverneur tot 2008. Hiermee behield hij zijn onschendbaarheid in Rusland. Eind 2006 liet zijn woordvoerder echter weten dat Abramovitsj per direct stopt als gouverneur "omdat zijn taak in Tsjoekotka is volbracht". Abramovitsj gebruikte Tsjoekotka namelijk als belastingparadijs om geen belastingen over zijn miljardeninkomsten te hoeven betalen. In 2003 werd de federale wet die hiervoor ruimte bood echter veranderd, waarop deze mogelijkheid verdween. Poetin liet hem echter in februari 2007 weten dat hij voor een derde termijn werd benoemd tot gouverneur. Begin juli 2008, bijna twee maanden na het aantreden van de nieuwe president Medvedev, verklaarde hij opnieuw zijn voornemen om af te treden aan het Kremlin, hetgeen ditmaal wel werd ingewilligd. Hij werd opgevolgd door Roman Kopin. In oktober 2008 stelde hij zich echter wel verkiesbaar als afgevaardigde voor het parlement van Tsjoekotka, waarin hij vervolgens met 97% van de stemmen werd verkozen.

Privéleven

Abramovitsj is twee maal getrouwd geweest. Zijn tweede huwelijk duurde van 1991 tot 2007, waarna zijn tweede vrouw Irina Malandina omgerekend 300 miljoen USD kreeg van Abramovitsj. De vijf kinderen uit zijn tweede huwelijk worden door Malandina verzorgd. Volgens de biograaf van Abramovitsj zat president Poetin achter de scheiding, omdat deze Abramovitsj als een soort van ambassadeur van Rusland zou zien en tevens bekend zou staan als een familieman. Abramovitsj, die werd gezien met het 23-jarige voormalige Russische model Daria Zjoekova, zou volgens de biograaf eerst niet achter de scheiding hebben gestaan, maar na een gesprek met Poetin plotseling wel.

Op dit moment is Abramovitsj bezig om de duurste woning in de Britse geschiedenis te bemachtigen. Zestien appartementen gelegen in de chique Londense wijk Knightsbridge zullen verbouwd worden tot een woning. Na de totale verbouwing zal het acht verdiepingen tellende pand een waarde van ongeveer 150 miljoen pond, wat neer komt op 190 miljoen euro, moeten hebben.

Chelsea FC

In 2003 kocht Abramovitsj de Engelse voetbalclub Chelsea voor een symbolisch bedrag van een pond. Bijkomende voorwaarde was wel dat Abramovitsj alle schulden van Chelsea zou afbetalen en geld in de club zou steken zodat de club weer in de Engelse top zou meedraaien. De eerste grote aankoop die Abramovitsj deed was Damien Duff. Hij kocht deze speler voor 18 miljoen pond (23 miljoen euro), van Blackburn Rovers. Voor beide clubs betekende dit meteen een nieuw clubrecord qua transferbedrag. Het grote doel, na twee keer Engels kampioen geweest te zijn in de Abramovitsj tijd, is om de Champions League te winnen. In 2004, 2005 en 2007 werd al de halve finale bereikt, maar nooit de zo felbegeerde finale zelf. In 2008 is Chelsea er wel in geslaagd om zo felbegeerde finale te bereiken. Maar ook deze keer heeft Abramovitsj zijn doelstelling niet gehaald. Zijn Chelsea verloor namelijk in Moskou op 21 mei na strafschoppen van Manchester United. Abramovitsj beschouwt Chelsea als zijn kindje en hij heeft dan ook toegezegd de club te blijven steunen in de toekomst.

Trivia

Hij heeft in 2004 een Boeing 767 aangeschaft, die hij liet ombouwen en nu vanwege de kleurstelling de bandiet wordt genoemd. De totale kosten werden in de westerse media eerst geschat op bijna 1 miljard , door een abusievelijke extra '0' die The Times in zijn persbericht uitgaf en die door veel andere media werd geciteerd. Kommersant liet later zien dat de kosten waarschijnlijk eerder tegen de 200 miljoen lopen.

Abramovitsj heeft vanwege zijn joodse achtergrond ook een aantal liefdadigheidsprojecten in de Israëlische steden Jeruzalem (Abramovitsj-wijk) en Tel Aviv geldelijk ondersteund.

Hij heeft een boek geschreven over Chelsea genaamd Chelsea FC: The Official Biography, waarin hij belooft de club te blijven steunen.

Op zijn jacht, de Eclipse heeft Abramovitsj ook een "paparazzischild", dat met behulp van lasers de elektronische lichtsensors van digitale camera's detecteert. Wanneer dit apparaat er een of meerdere vindt schiet het apparaat een geconcentreerde lichtstraal af die foto's maken onmogelijk maakt.

Abramovich started commercial activity in the late 1980s when Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms permitted small private businesses.

Abramovich founded five companies to conduct resale and act as intermediaries, eventually specializing in trading of oil and oil products.

In 1992, Boris Berezovsky, the most powerful of Russia's tycoons befriended him and brought him to an inner circle of then president Boris Yeltsin. According to General Korzhakov, Roman Abramovich was the major finance manager of Yeltsin's family. Abramovich was considered the cashier of the Yeltsin circle. Tatyana and her husband were frequent guests at Abramovich. These days Abramovich is said to have close ties to President Vladimir Putin's chief of staff, Alexander Voloshin.

In the mid nineties the president was in trouble as ordinary Russians saw a drop in living standards, with Russia in chaos as it was restructuring due to the collapse of communism. Russia had lost trade. Some say the economic collapse was due to the sudden reduction in spending on the army. Some say it was due to the loss of Russia's prime status in the former eastern block. Some says it was due to a poor president, who did no run the nation properly. There was talk of him being a drinker. He attempted to direct an orchestra during his visit to Germany. He ordered his press secretary Vyacheslav Kostikov to be thrown into Volga river in order for humiliation.

With this occurring Gennady Zyuganov a communist rival became a more popular candidate. Zyuganov stressed the decline in living standards corresponded with a dismantlement of Soviet socialism. He claimed economic power was left concentrated in a crooked few of the population. Violent crime increased, ethnic groups throughout Russia embarked on campaigns, sometimes violent, to win autonomy. The newly revitalized Communist Party of the Russian Federation made a strong showing, and its leader, Gennady Zyuganov, emerged as a serious challenger to President Boris Yeltsin. Zyuganov entered the Russian presidential election, 1996, as the standard bearer of the Russian Communist Party.

With this background the president turned to the inner circle of oligarch buddies. Abramovich and Berezovsky funded his re-election. By coincidence Abramovich and Berezovsky took control over massive sections of Russia's oil industry. They acquired shares in Sibneft (created by presidential decree in 1995) by bidding in auctions. Most financial observers say the companies were bought for below book values.

In July 1996, Yeltsin was re elected as president with financial support from influential business oligarchs.

Abramovich and his business partner Evgueny Shvindler acquired significant stakes in Russia's largest air company Aeroflot and the aluminum giant Rusal, as well as in smaller companies in the automobile industry, pharmaceuticals, food processing, real estate and other sectors.

Mr Berezovsky was up to this point the dominant partner, but in fell lost favour with the Putin regime. Berezovsky was strongly opposed to the Second Chechen War, and was a leading proponent of political and economic liberalization in Russia.After Vladimir Putin's 2000 presidential campaign., he was forced into exile to Britain following a criminal investigation to fraud charges. Mr Abramovich took over much of Berezovsky' s role, and built up his own businesses. He took 80% of Sibneft, Russia's fifth largest oil company, 50% of Rusal, the Russian aluminium oil monopoly, and a quarter of Aeroflot, Russia's airline.

By 2001 he became the wealthiest man in Russia, he soon became an intentionally famous with purchase of the English soccer side.

He has sold his share in Sibneft, (now Gazprom Neft), and is now only the second wealthiest man in Russia.

The good

In 1999 Abramovich was elected to the State Duma as the representative for the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, an impoverished region in the Russian Far East, showing support for democracy He has plouged a fortune into Chukotka, supporting a the construction of a college, a hospital, renovating an airport and boosted the local economy, employing indigenous people.

He was the awarded the Order of Honour.

Has invested a fortune into Chelsea, and shows visible emotion during matches.

Has got the Russian national team Guus Hiddink as their boss, one of the best bosses in soccer today.

Many give support for the way he kept Boris Yeltsin in control, when many claim the opponent was an old fashioned communist who would have brought the cold war back.

A firm supporter of Jewish causes in Russia and Israeli causes, and has funded several projects in the Abramovich neighborhood

It is said that his buddy Boris Berezovsky was exiled because of his support for freedom, democracy, human rights, peace, in Chechnia. Berezovsky, like many businessmen, was targeted for extortion by the Russian mafia, powerful in Moscow at the time. He survived several assassination attempts.

What are we to make of the fact that almost all major oligarchs in jail or exile are Jews.

The bad

Bigoted Anti Semites say he is part of a jewish conspiracy that has depleted Russia of it's wealth. They do not pay any attention to the other wealthy people who depleted the nation. Yeltsin was not of that religion. Putin is not. What about the Russian Maffia. They claim anything bad about him is because of his ethnic background, and that no other people damaged Russia, and seek to target everyone of his ethnic background for everything bad he has done. In their view anyone who is not Jewish but works with anyone of their background is a stooge. When you read some of the stuff about the guy, don't take its as an excuse for bigotry, or a conspiracy theory.

Many say his support for sport sides does nothing for ordinary Russians.

Mind you many British business men plough a fortune into soccer sides.

Many say his support for an English soccer side is taking required revenue away from Russians. It is throwing cash at the wealthy, from revenue derived from the poor.

Other more terrifying and accusations about him exist:

According to General Korzhakov a former body guard of Yeltsin. The then president provided Abramovich with protection from prosecution for criminal activities ranging from stealing diesel fuel to illegally acquiring Sibneft in a staged contest in a deal to win the presidency. Despite only gaining 35% of the first round vote in the 1996 elections. In 1995 Roman Abramovich (with Boris Berezovsky) acquired a controlling interest in Sibneft. The deal was in the controversial Loans for shares program and cost partners $100m, although the true cost of the company was in billions of dollars. Many Russians claim this was theft of Russian natural resources, done so the buddies would fund the presidency.

In 1992, he was investigated, and cleared, for misappropriation of 55 railroad wagons of diesel fuel from Ukhtinsky petroleum processing plant.

One website makes unsubstantiated claims that he is the "most terrifying of oligarchs".

* Claiming he assassinated a governor of the Russian state of Magadan, Valentin Tsvetkov. The assassination was caught on videotape by cameras on a nearby building housing offices associated with the Federation Council. Yet there were numerous claims about the assassination of "The Bulldozer". Some claimed that it was Putin who had him assassinated, trying to clear out a corrupt region. Despite claims that the governor had made good progress in stopping corruption. Other claims suggested, it was local Magadan crime groups described as the "Fish MAFIA". Due to the wealth the region generates from fish. Chukotka is next door to the Magadan Oblast, and was said to be considered for a merger. The theory was that Chukotka's governor feared he could not win an election against such an opponent so had him Chuked... Many thought it must have been someone important at the top of the state, who ordered the assassination, as no one had been caught. It was seen as a "contract hit". Then in 2004 two Russians were arrested in Spain, they were linked according to the press to "fishery firms", angry at the dead governor for handing for free over 60% of the regions fish stock to a state owned enterprise headed by his chief adviser on fishing instead of selling the quota to tender. He was in favour of control on the granting of lucrative fishing licenses. So it seems Chukotka was not connected to the hit. But there was something fishy going on.

Is he a Crook or a hero

*The same website viewed that the Chukotka boss tried to assassinate Vice Mayor Iosif Ordzhonikidze of Moscow twice, when he was refused an oil refinery buy-up. In the second try, two gunmen fired on the Moscow vice mayor as he neared the City Hall, during a morning rush hour, wounding him. Shortly after the second attempt, Mayor Luzhkov softened the stance and spoke of an agreement on how to give up control of the refinery. This led to the conclusion that the Chukotka boss did the hit. Yet no evidence was found to back this up. As this case has not been solved it has brought about many conspiracy theories in the Russia. One theory tried to say it was to do with Iosif Ordzhonikidze's advise against a Russian Grand Prix, that caused the hit. One is that it was a mafia try, linked to building project contracts. Ordzhonikidze has been seen as moral guardian by some for saying the city should not become a new Las Vegas, full of casinos. Other theories for this attempted assassination include that it was revenge by a Russian senator, on Iosif Ordzhonikidze for Ordzhonikidze's bodyguard allegedly murdering the senator's cousin. Yet once again no evidence is found for this. Other revenge theories for the Ordzhonikidze hit involve assassinated American businessmen, anger at failed business trades, revenge for bribery allegations. Some said the attempt was staged. This adds up to myriad of conspiracy theories. Where either a vice mayor is a hero standing up to corruption, or is a terrifying crook. The people of Russia are now so cynical of the press, that in a recent survey, 80% were found to be against the idea of the free press. On one level a horrifying statistic. But perhaps a predicable, if wrong, result of a society with a high rate of organized crime where it is possible to make claims and counter claims, of such an extent that people become tired, confused at what is truth and what is fiction, and search for one truth. Where one minute a politician (such as Ordzhonikidze), or a business man (Abramovich) is being being claimed as a hero fighting poverty, corruption (under daily threat of assassination on the crooks he upsets), and the next is claimed as a devious crook, murdering and robbing his way to the top, taking kick backs.

Conspiracy theories claims sections of the Russian elite, in involvement with the Russian Mob, Mafia, drug trafficking, contract murder, money laundering, illegal gambling, prostitution, Russkaya Mafiya, Red Mafia, Krasnaya Mafi, car theft, extortion, murder, racketeering. Some wild conspiracy theories claim the Russian KGB, and now FSB back up criminal groups to take over criminal groups in other nations, to increase Russian influence, just as the CIA often kept criminal groups in the cold war going to hold control underground sections of nations they did not run. In the Soviet union the Russian mafia forged links with the elite, are those links still going. Does the state help. One of the causes of the downfall of the Eastern block is thought to be that much of the communist elite was becoming like a Mafia group rather than a genuine political theory. The state became more divided in wealth according some anecdotal evidence from the seventies. One conspiracy is that, is it it possible the state was overtaken by organized groups who to this day hold influence.

* Another theory is that as being a governor, or senator makes you immune to prosecution, often it is argued many crooks deliberately become a governor or senator to avoid prosecution. This is seen by conspiracy theorists, as the main cause of why Abramovich, took over Chukotka, not to do good, but to get away with bad. This despite that fact that Abramovich has given a fortune to the state, and tried to put in other people to run the state. The president has now done away with elections to be governor, they are now appointed, by the president, and guess how has been appointed the boss of Chukotka.

The ugly - Trivia

In 2004, a consortium which included Gwyneth Paltrow and Roman Abramovich paid £28,000 for a 2lb truffle in London's Zafferano restaurant. The chef went on holiday, taking the keys to a refrigerated safe. When he returned, the truffle was off.

A year later a Chelsea football club shirt raised dosh for a charity while breaking a auction record. The shirt, signed by Chelsea players and Roman Abramovich, was bought by Pany Christoforou, for £3,005, a record for the club site. Roman Abramovich's signature was seen as a cause as it is rare.
