Vatican staffers who have been leaking embarrassing letters about corruption and nepotism inside the tiny city state are to be hunted down by a crack squad of cardinals led by a senior member of the religious group Opus Dei.

Irritated by the anonymous release of documents to the press this year, Pope Benedict has named Cardinal Julian Herranz, 82, to lead a three-man team which will haul in staffers for questioning and rifle through files until they catch the perpetrators of what has been dubbed "Vatileaks".

A short statement printed on Thursday on the front page of the Vatican's daily newspaper warned the team had a full "pontifical mandate" to "shed complete light" on the whistle blowers, who have lifted the lid on alleged theft and false accounting.

Herranz was a long-time personal secretary to Josemaría Escrivá , the now canonised founder of Opus Dei, which has been accused of excessive secrecy, strict control over members and undue influence within the Vatican – a reputation pushed by Dan Brown's thriller The Da Vinci Code.

One of two cardinals who are members of the group, Herranz has insisted that Opus Dei has "no hidden agenda" and is only interested in the "the message of Christ", but he does appear to be cut out to be a Vatican troubleshooter, once stating that "men need to act decisively, like Jesus Christ – who was a real man".

Herranz's squad, which met for the first time this week, is just one of three inquiries now under way at the Holy See into the leak of letters in January and February that discuss the mysterious kidnapping of Emanuela Orlandi – the daughter of a Vatican employee in 1983 – the likely date of Benedict's death and an internal row over just how transparent the Vatican bank should be as it tries to shrug off allegations of money laundering.

The most shocking revelations are in a letter addressed to the Vatican's secretary of state by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the deputy governor of Vatican City, denouncing the signing by employees of inflated contracts with friendly companies. As proof, Viganò said he had discovered the price of the Christmas nativity scene in St Peter's Square was €250,000 (£204,000) more than it should have been.

One priest, who Viganò describes as "vulgar" and "arrogant" had been responsible for nepotism, fake invoicing and €70,000 going missing, he claimed.

After telling all, Viganò was reassigned to the US as papal nunzio, an appointment he describes as punishment for his honesty in a plaintive letter to Benedict in which he begs for a commission to look into his claims.

Since then, the Vatican has instead focused on finding out who leaked the letters, which it describes as "biased and trivial".

"I hope the Vatican employs the same tenacity in improving transparency at its bank and in reopening the Orlandi kidnapping case as it has with this inquiry," said Gianluigi Nuzzi, the Italian journalist who first broadcast the contents of the Viganò letters.

AMSTERDAM – In Windows 8 wordt niet standaard het afspelen van films die op dvd’s staan ondersteund. Gebruikers die dat wel willen, moeten daar extra voor betalen.

Dat bevestigt Microsoft in een blog.

Volgens het bedrijf zijn de kosten van het mogelijk maken van het afspelen van films op fysieke dvd’s hoog en hebben partners daar hun zorgen over geuit.

"De consumptie van dvd’s is de afgelopen jaren hard gedaald. Door het veranderende landschap en de kosten hebben we besloten Windows Media Center niet standaard in Windows 8 te verwerken", aldus Microsoft.

Het is in de nieuwe versie van het besturingssysteem ook niet standaard mogelijk om tv via de pc te kijken. Blu-ray wordt überhaupt niet ondersteund. Hoeveel betaald moet worden voor het toevoegen van Windows Media Center voor onder meer het afspelen van dvd’s is niet bekend.

Windows Media Player wordt wel verwerkt in alle versies van Windows 8. Codecs als h.264, mp4, wma, mp3 en mpeg worden daarin wel ondersteund.

Dat kan doordat de stemprocedure daar mogelijkheden voor geeft. Al zou je uit de berichten in de MSM de indruk krijgen dat die kans verkeken is en Romney al zoveel stemmen heeft behaald in de “primeries” (de voorverkiezingen per staat) dat hij nooit meer in te halen is bij de keuze voor de Republikeinse Presidentskandidaat. Dat is onjuist. Paul kan die benoeming nog steeds binnenhalen!

Dat kan door de ingewikkelde procedure bij de definitieve keuze die door de “afgevaardigden” (de “delegates”) wordt toegepast. Er zijn namelijk verschillen of de afgevaardigden van een staat allemaal moeten stemmen op de kandidaat die in hun staat de meeste stemmen heeft gekregen, of dat zij ook mogen kiezen op de kandidaat van hun eigen keuze. En dat opent de kans voor Paul.

Daarom zijn de verkiezingen nog steeds in de fase van de voorverkiezingen, en zou de definitieve keuze pas bij de eindstemming Plaats vinden.

En dan zou het dus Ron Paul tegen Barrack Obama worden!

De VS is al een tijdje in de ban van de verkiezingen die in november van dit jaar zullen plaatsvinden. De strijd zal gaan tussen Obama die een tweede termijn wil en de republikein Mitt Romney, zo meldt ons ook de Nederlandse pers. Ondanks dat Obama waanzinnig onpopulair is maakt hij een goede kans tegen de "perfecte kloon van een presidentskandidaat" Romney. Obama zelf is al overtuigd van zijn herverkiezing. But then, a wild Paul appears... Dankzij het waanzinnig ingewikkelde verkiezingssysteem loopt de republikeinse kandidaat Ron Paul nu in op Mitt; ondanks dat hij niet direct een staat heeft gewonnen heeft hij al in zeven staten de meerderheid van de kiesmannen toegewezen gekregen en staat hij nu naast Romney op de "ticket" voor de presidentskandidaat-verkiezing in Florida.



Het establishment in de VS is al sinds zijn vorige gooi naar het presidentschap in 2008 doodsbang voor (medical doctor) Ron Paul. Waarom? Omdat hij de enige politicus in Washington is die consistent is in zijn boodschap sinds zijn verkiezing in 1971 tot congreslid, en zijn belangrijkste boodschap is "vrijheid voor iedereen", iets wat hij onder meer vertaalt in het stoppen van de "war on drugs" en de oorlogen in Irak en Afghanistan, het sluiten van meer dan 1000 legerbasissen in verschillende buitenlanden, het afschaffen van inkomstenbelastingen en de Federal Reserve, de dollar weer koppelen aan de goud en zilverprijs. Ook gelooft hij heilig in vrije-markt-regulering. Kortom: "the proper role for government in America is to provide national defense, a court system for civil disputes, a criminal justice system for acts of force and fraud, and little else."

A panel of US health experts has for the first time backed a drug to prevent HIV infection in healthy people.

The panel recommended US regulators approve the daily pill, Truvada, for use by people considered at high risk of contracting the Aids virus.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not required to follow the panel’s advice, but it usually does.

Correspondents say the move could prove to be a new milestone in the fight against HIV/Aids.

Truvada is already approved by the FDA for people who are HIV-positive, and is taken along with existing anti-retroviral drugs.

Studies from 2010 showed that Truvada, made by California-based Gilead Sciences, reduced the risk of HIV in healthy gay men – and among HIV-negative heterosexual partners of people who are HIV positive – by between 44% and 73%.

June decision
The Antiviral Drugs Advisory Committee, which advises the FDA, voted 19-3 in favour of prescribing the drug to the highest risk group – non-infected men who have sex with multiple male partners.

They also approved it, by majority votes, for uninfected people with HIV-positive partners and for other groups considered at risk of acquiring HIV through sexual activity.

The votes followed an 11-hour meeting of the panel in Silver Spring, Maryland, and a lengthy public comments session.

Some health providers voiced concern that the pill could increase risky behaviour and could lead to a drug-resistant strain of HIV.

But others welcomed the panel’s recommendation.

“This brings us closer to a watershed for global HIV prevention efforts,” said Mitchell Warren, executive director of the Aids Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, after the vote.

The FDA is expected to make its decision by 15 June.

Gilead Sciences Inc. (GILD)’s experimental HIV pill Quad may need additional monitoring because of kidney damage seen in studies, U.S. regulators said.

The four-in-one combination pill from Gilead, the largest maker of AIDS drugs, had a “generally acceptable” safety profile and retained more patients than standard treatments, Food and Drug Administration staff said in a report today. The agency asked advisers whether patients taking the drug should undergo extra testing to monitor for kidney complications.

The medicine is designed to have fewer side effects than current treatments. Approval of the Quad pill is crucial for Foster City, California-based Gilead, said Robyn Karnauskas, an analyst with Deutsche Bank AG in New York. The drugmaker is facing the loss of half of its revenue from patent expirations on AIDS therapies starting in 2018. If approved the new medicine may generate as much as $4 billion in annual sales, she said.

“It is really important for Gilead as a stock that the Quad comes to market and there is nothing bad in the data,” Karnauskas said in a telephone interview. “It will really hurt the stock if this drug doesn’t come to market.”

The FDA’s panel of advisers will meet on May 11 to make a recommendation on the drug. The agency doesn’t have to follow the advice of the committee.
Shares Gain

Gilead rose 2.4 percent to $50.64 at the close of New York trading. The stock has gained 23 percent in the past 12 months.

Gilead’s three-drug pill Atripla, approved in 2006, is the top-selling AIDS medicine. The therapy mixes Gilead’s two-drug medicine Truvada, approved in 2004, with Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY)’s Sustiva. Quad contains four Gilead compounds in a single pill that patients take once a day.

An FDA review of studies funded by Gilead found a higher number of kidney problems reported in people taking Quad compared with other HIV treatments. Those side effects included four cases of kidney failure and one case of a rare syndrome where substances aren’t absorbed into the blood stream by the kidneys.

Still, there were fewer patients who stopped taking Quad early because of side effects and the incidence of side effects was similar to other drugs, the FDA said.

Karnauskas said she isn’t concerned that the kidney risk may prevent the drug from getting to market.

“It is just a minor detail, which is why I’m not worried,” she said.

Company-sponsored studies have shown Quad works as well as Atripla. Eighty-eight percent of patients in a 48-week study who took Quad had no detectable levels of HIV in their blood compared with 84 percent of those taking Atripla, according to research presented in March at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Seattle.

The FDA is scheduled to decide by Aug. 27 whether to approve Quad for U.S. sale.
