NASA Spacecraft Reveals Recent Geological Activity on the Moon

New images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft show the moon's crust is being stretched, forming minute valleys in a few small areas on the lunar surface. Scientists propose this geologic activity occurred less than 50 million years ago, which is considered recent compared to the moon's age of more than 4.5 billion years.

Where is the material that used to fill the Grand Canyon?

In previous Picture of the Day articles, it was suggested that features on other planets and moons should be used to help explain what is found on Earth, rather than vise-versa. Since the processes that exist on Earth involve erosion by wind and water, formations on Mars, for example, are often attributed to open water flowing on the surface of that now desiccated body.

The Grand Canyon is approximately 400 kilometers long, 28 kilometers wide, and almost two kilometers deep. Modern geologists assume that it has been forming for millions of years, since the limestone deposits near its bottom are thought to be 250 million years old, based on the type of fossil found embedded in it.

According to the uniformitarian view of paleontology, fossils are the remains of animals and plants that were turned to stone before they decayed and dissolved in mud or silt. Pressure from the overburden of later deposits, possibly volcanic activity, as well, hardened the sediments over millions of years. The various layers of sedimentary rock around the world determine when the organisms lived, since there is an assumption that the upper layers are younger than those beneath. The layers are known as “the geologic column.”

The ideas about the strata and the accompanying fossils suffer from a kind of circular reasoning. If a type of fossil is found in a rock, its position determines the age of the rock because certain fossils are presumed to lie within certain types of rock. However, since fossilized bones cannot be dated, it is the type of stone and its position in the geologic column that determine the age of the fossil. Surely this is an example of hoisting by one’s own bootstraps.

In the Electric Universe hypothesis, there is an answer to the dichotomy, as well as to the problem posed at the beginning of this article: where did the Grand Canyon’s rock strata go? Even today, the question of the Grand Canyon’s origin confounds geologists. What caused the Colorado River to make several right-angle turns in its journey to the sea? If water erosion alone is considered, then it was also necessary for the river to flow uphill at one point, while punching through a stoney mountain range.

Along with the river’s desert wandering, another conundrum facing geophysicists and hydrologists is the lack of a delta. Why is there no accumulation of sediments in the Sea of Cortez? If the Colorado River has been eroding the Grand Canyon for such a long time, what happened to the mud and sand that’s supposed to have washed downstream?

One of the tenets of the Electric Universe theory is that the planets and moons in the Solar System were scarred by massive plasma discharges at some time in the recent past. As mentioned above, Mars exhibits enormous formations that all share common characteristics. Regardless of scale, canyons, cliffs, and trenches on Mars possess scalloped edges, vertical walls, flat floors, transverse ripples, a narrow channel inside a wider one, crater chains, and Lichtenberg figures etched into the surrounding strata.

All images of the Grand Canyon from space reveal similar morphology. There are scalloped edges along its rim; so-called “hanging canyons” are perpendicular to the main channel; the side branches are Lichtenberg figures; the riverbed is narrow, while the main canyon is much wider; and the walls of the canyon are predominantly vertical.

Birkeland currents caused by the interaction of charged bodies might act like plasma torches, excavating the bedrock, and then drawing it up the secondary discharge vortex, just as a welding arc accelerates matter against gravity, rock and dust will be hurled into space. Thus, the Grand Canyon’s material is not found in a delta because it is no longer on Earth.

This also means that it could be far younger than its estimated millions of years, since radiometric dating systems would have been completely randomized by the electromagnetic effects of interplanetary lightning bolts. Therefore, fossils and stratigraphic placement need to be seen from a catastrophic viewpoint and may be useless when it comes to measuring their absolute age.

Solar Lightning



Solar flares can be thought of as giant lightning discharges.

Conventional thinking suggests that the Sun accelerates charged particles into space in the same way that sound waves are amplified. Eruptions in the photosphere travel outward through “acoustical wave-guides,” known as magnetic flux tubes. Structures called spicules rise thousands of kilometers above the photosphere and carry the hot gas with them.

The Sun is the locus of positive charge with respect to interstellar plasma. Sunspots appear when electric discharges penetrate the photosphere, allowing electric current to flow into its depths. Electromagnetic flux tubes expose the Sun’s cooler interior. The idea of acoustic heat transfer from the core cannot be supported by any observations of the Sun.

As standard theories about the Sun propose, there is also a vast “conveyor belt” circulating solar matter down into magnetically active zones deep inside the solar interior, where it is “reenergized.” When sunspot magnetic fields begin to decline, the conveyor belt pulls what’s left inside the Sun. As a recent press release states, they are drawn 300,000 kilometers below the surface, where they are re-magnetized by the “solar dynamo.” The sunspots become buoyant in the plasma flow, rising back up to the photosphere to start a new solar cycle.

In an Electric Universe, plasma discharge behavior is a better model for solar activity. Laboratory experiments with a positively charged sphere show that a plasma torus forms above its equator. Electric discharges bridge the torus with the middle and lower latitudes of the sphere. Spicules are consistent with the principle of “anode tufting,” a plasma discharge effect expected of a positively charged electric Sun.

Closeup images of sunspot filaments, seen clearly in sunspot penumbrae, indicate that they are whirling charge vortices. Looking down into a sunspot means seeing the rotating discharge columns in profile. Electric discharges in plasma form rope-like, hollow tendrils. Since they are funnels of plasma, their centers are darker, where convection cells would appear darker at their edges.

Standard theory does not accept that the darker and cooler regions revealed by sunspots means that the Sun is cooler in its interior.

“It is not coincidence that the photosphere has the appearance, the temperature and spectrum of an electric arc; it has arc characteristics because it is an electric arc, or a large number of arcs in parallel. These arcs quickly result in the neutralization of the accumulated space charge in their neighbourhood and go out. They are not therefore stable discharges, but may rather be looked upon as transient sparks. Arcs thus continually appear and disappear. Coronal arches and multiple loop structures connect sunspots and rise up to penetrate the chromosphere. The chromosphere is a plasma sheath, or double layer region of the Sun, where most of its electrical energy is contained. When the current flowing into the Sun’s plasma sheath increases beyond a critical threshold it can trigger a sudden release of that energy, causing solar flares and enormous prominence eruptions.

Powerful looping electric currents generate secondary toroidal magnetic fields that surround the loop( solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov/images/loopslcn.mov ). When the current grows too strong, the plasma double layer is destroyed. That event interrupts the current flow and the stored electromagnetic energy is blasted into space as a solar flare. Solar flares can therefore be thought of as tremendous lightning bursts, discharging vast quantities of matter at near relativistic speeds.

The idea of a Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was originally proposed early in the 1980s. Since the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP) was at the end of its life, and a machine capable of generating more power was needed, a 20 nation consortium, all members of CERN (Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire), started design work in 1994.

The LHC straddles the border between Switzerland and France, occupying a 27 kilometer long, circular tunnel. Its electromagnets force protons into a narrow beam, split it in two, and then send the two streams of charged particles around the ring in opposite directions, causing the twin beams to collide head on.

Although the LHC was built to carry out a number of experiments, most particle physicists will admit that the $10 billion was spent to find the Higgs boson.

Physicists postulate that matter is built from twelve fundamental particles, six quarks and six leptons. Note that protons and neutrons are not considered “fundamental,” since they are made of quarks. Quarks are defined as elementary particles with electric charges one-third or two-thirds that of the electron. Leptons are a group of elementary particles (and antiparticles), such as electrons, muons, or neutrinos that are affected by electromagnetic and weak interactions.

According to the standard theory of quantum mechanics, quarks are “colored” and “flavored,” but a detailed explanation of those fields of influence is not germane to this account. The quark flavors are up, down, bottom, top, strange, and charm. Each of the six quark flavors can have three different colors, red, green, or blue. The lepton table includes the electron, electron-neutrino, muon, muon-neutrino, tau, and tau-neutrino. The muon and the tau leptons are not stable, however, and quickly decay.

While leptons are thought to participate in weak atomic interactions, other particles such as mesons, baryons, and hadrons are more massive and are affected by strong force influences. Quantum mechanics proposes that there are four forces at work in nature: the strong force, which holds atomic nuclei together; the electromagnetic force, which holds atoms and molecules together; the weak force, which governs radioactive decay; and the gravitational force, which attracts matter to itself in an inverse square relationship over infinite distance.

According to nuclear physicists, a “force” is more like an exchange. When the strong force binds an atomic nucleus together, for example, the particles exchange “carrier particles,” called bosons. Each force requires its own boson. It is the photon that supposedly carries the electromagnetic force, and “gluons” carry the strong force. An ongoing problem for physicists is the detection of “gravitons” that supposedly carry the gravitational force.

In 1964, Peter Higgs speculated that space is permeated by a “field,” similar to an electromagnetic field. When particles travel through space, they encounter this field, acquiring “mass.” The concept can be illustrated by particles moving through a viscous fluid: the greater interaction of particles with the field, the greater their mass. The existence of the Higgs field is an essential component of his hypothesis.

As previously mentioned, quantum theory requires that fields be associated with carrier particles, so the expectation is that there must be a particle carrying the Higgs field: the Higgs boson. For the last few years, LHC’s focus has been to “find” the Higgs boson and determine if this mass origin hypothesis is correct.

Electric Universe advocates propose that the entire quantum mechanical universe requires a new viewpoint. Since it is the electric force that governs the cosmos, the behavior, origin, and structure of matter needs to be revised. One of the most interesting aspects of this premise is the clues that exist within quantum mechanics, itself.

Plasma’s electrical and physical properties are scalable over many orders of magnitude. Laboratory experiments can model what is observed in space. Gravity’s force falls off with the square of the distance, while the attraction between electrified plasma filaments is linear and up to 39 orders of magnitude greater than gravity. Looking at the four hypothetical quantum forces, it can be seen that the strong force is also 39 orders of magnitude greater than gravity. Perhaps that relationship is better explained with the electric force.

Virtual models operating within computer algorithms have replaced direct observation in recent years: the natural philosophy of science has been abandoned. Computer models are used to build other models, which, in turn, are used to “confirm” further models. Physics used to mean investigating the nature and properties of matter and energy. Instead, it has become the handmaiden to mathematics.

Hot Plasma Explosions Inflate Saturn’s Magnetic Field

A new analysis based on data from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft finds a causal link between mysterious, periodic signals from Saturn’s magnetic field and explosions of hot ionized gas, known as plasma, around the planet.

Scientists have found that enormous clouds of plasma periodically bloom around Saturn and move around the planet like an unbalanced load of laundry on spin cycle. The movement of this hot plasma produces a repeating signature “thump” in measurements of Saturn’s rotating magnetic environment and helps to illustrate why scientists have had such a difficult time measuring the length of a day on Saturn.

“This is a breakthrough that may point us to the origin of the mysteriously changing periodicities that cloud the true rotation period of Saturn,” said Pontus Brandt, the lead author on the paper and a Cassini team scientist based at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. “The big question now is why these explosions occur periodically.”

The data show how plasma injections, electrical currents and Saturn’s magnetic field — phenomena that are invisible to the human eye — are partners in an intricate choreography. Periodic plasma explosions form islands of pressure that rotate around Saturn. The islands of pressure “inflate” the magnetic field.

The visualization shows how invisible hot plasma in Saturn’s magnetosphere – the magnetic bubble around the planet — explodes and distorts magnetic field lines in response to the pressure. Saturn’s magnetosphere is not a perfect bubble because it is blown back by the force of the solar wind, which contains charged particles streaming off the sun.

The force of the solar wind stretches the magnetic field of the side of Saturn facing away from the sun into a so-called magnetotail. The collapse of the magnetotail appears to kick off a process that causes the hot plasma bursts, which in turn inflate the magnetic field in the inner magnetosphere.

Scientists are still investigating what causes Saturn’s magnetotail to collapse, but there are strong indications that cold, dense plasma originally from Saturn’s moon Enceladus rotates with Saturn. Centrifugal forces stretch the magnetic field until part of the tail snaps back.

The snapping back heats plasma around Saturn and the heated plasma becomes trapped in the magnetic field. It rotates around the planet in islands at the speed of about 100 kilometers per second (200,000 mph). In the same way that high and low pressure systems on Earth cause winds, the high pressures of space cause electrical currents. Currents cause magnetic field distortions.

A radio signal known as Saturn Kilometric Radiation, which scientists have used to estimate the length of a day on Saturn, is intimately linked to the behavior of Saturn’s magnetic field. Because Saturn has no surface or fixed point to clock its rotation rate, scientists inferred the rotation rate from timing the peaks in this type of radio emission, which is assumed to surge with each rotation of a planet. This method has worked for Jupiter, but the Saturn signals have varied. Measurements from the early 1980s taken by NASA’s Voyager spacecraft, data obtained in 2000 by the ESA/NASA Ulysses mission, and Cassini data from about 2003 to the present differ by a small, but significant degree. As a result, scientists are not sure how long a Saturn day is.

“What’s important about this new work is that scientists are beginning to describe the global, causal relationships between some of the complex, invisible forces that shape the Saturn environment,” said Marcia Burton, the Cassini fields and particles investigation scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. “The new results still don’t give us the length of a Saturn day, but they do give us important clues to begin figuring it out. The Saturn day length, or Saturn’s rotation rate, is important for determining fundamental properties of Saturn, like the structure of its interior and the speed of its winds.”

Plasma is invisible to the human eye. But the ion and neutral camera on Cassini’s magnetospheric imaging instrument provides a three-dimensional view by detecting energetic neutral atoms emitted from the plasma clouds around Saturn. Energetic neutral atoms form when cold, neutral gas collides with electrically-charged particles in a cloud of plasma. The resulting particles are neutrally charged, so they are able to escape magnetic fields and zoom off into space. The emission of these particles often occurs in the magnetic fields surrounding planets.

By stringing together images obtained every half hour, scientists produced movies of plasma as it drifted around the planet. Scientists used these images to reconstruct the 3-D pressure produced by the plasma clouds, and supplemented those results with plasma pressures derived from the Cassini plasma spectrometer. Once scientists understood the pressure and its evolution, they could calculate the associated magnetic field perturbations along the Cassini flight path. The calculated field perturbation matched the observed magnetic field “thumps” perfectly, confirming the source of the field oscillations.

“We all know that changing rotation periods have been observed at pulsars, millions of light years from our solar system, and now we find that a similar phenomenon is observed right here at Saturn,” said Tom Krimigis, principal investigator of the magnetospheric imaging instrument, also based at the Applied Physics Laboratory and the Academy of Athens, Greece. “With instruments right at the spot where it’s happening, we can tell that plasma flows and complex current systems can mask the real rotation period of the central body. That’s how observations in our solar system help us understand what is seen in distant astrophysical objects.”

Why are animals used so widely in coats of arms?

The familiar red dragon of Wales and the double-headed eagle of the House of Habsburg exemplify a widespread and familiar practice to embed animal figures in heraldic devices, both in the Old and New Worlds, but few people dwell on the rationale of such a seemingly absurd practice.

The fantastic nature of a double-headed bird, a unicorn or a dragon alone identifies the realm of mythology as the home of such creatures emblazoned on armorial bearings, but what bearing do mythical beings have on aristocratic pedigrees?

Surprisingly, far from being frivolous ornamental touches, the zoological components of inherited family badges often boast longer pedigrees than the families themselves, reaching back into prehistoric times when many a noble lineage laid claim to have descended from some mythical beast.

The ‘mythogenealogies’ of individual lineages are rooted in the more archaic practice of totemism, which once prevailed on every inhabited continent. On this belief system, every clan, tribe or moiety asserted descent from a ‘totem’ believed to have lived in illo tempore. The overwhelming majority of such totems were animals, identified as the ancestral ‘people’ or ‘gods’ alive during the epoch of creation.

Anthropologists have amassed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of traditional reports that ‘animals’ and ‘people’ were identical at the dawn of time – beings possessing magical powers, typically of giant proportions and able to inhabit the heavens as easily as the earth, who were the active forces in the grand myths of a ‘golden age’, cosmic war and disaster, the formation of the earth’s geological features and the foundation of human culture.

In some cases, the conceptual development from a mythical ancestor to a heraldic feature can be followed through in historical sources. Nations along the Pacific coast of North America have long used their totem poles as genealogical records akin to the arms of European nobles – and to the present day they directly identify the beings stacked up in the poles with legendary forebears, most notably ‘Raven’, and their associated stories.

Even in the Old World it is sometimes possible to trace heraldic animals back to their distant totemic sources. The arms of Hungary’s national army, officially the Hungarian Defense Force, and earlier the principality of Transylvania, featured the mythical falcon Turul as a representation of the Hungarian nobility, usually depicted in black. In Magyar mythology, Turul sired the first dynasty of Hungarian monarchs by impregnating Emese during a dream; her son Álmos (c. 820 – c. 895) became the first Grand Prince of the Magyars. In a second intervention, Turul guided the people towards their eventual homeland, Hungary.

Turul’s own origins take one to the mythology of the axis mundi, or cosmic axis, for this avian progenitor of kings used to perch on the tree of life connecting sky, earth and underworld. In this role, Turul emerges as the Hungarian counterpart to the Egyptian ‘winged disc’ on its pedestal, identified as Horus, Phoenix on his tree or mound, the Zoroastrian griffin Saēna, ‘Raven’ on his totem pole, the Omaha thunderbird on his ‘luminous tree’, the bird Vuqub-Kaqix or ‘Seven-Macaw’ seated on a giant nance tree in Quiché Maya lore, and scores of others. If the blue blood of Magyar princes once coursed through the veins of a bird universally linked to the crest of a conspicuous cosmic pillar, no mythologist should forbear to enquire what sort of bird that could have been.

According to the thesis here defended, global elements in the traditional mythology of creation reflect the memory of extraordinary atmospheric, climatological and geological changes that reshaped the familiar environment of people during the early Holocene period. Enhanced electrical activity in the inner solar system would have transformed near-earth plasmas into a visible column that seemed to tie the ‘sky’ to the horizon like an umbilical cord. This column, along with concomitant figures such as the ‘thunderbird’ at its apex and a dragon around its trunk, would have been shaped by electromagnetic forces acting on dusty plasma in the upper atmosphere.

As the protagonists in this resplendent – and often violent – display came to serve as exemplary deities and kings, leaders worldwide sought to fortify their authority and credibility by extravagant claims of direct descent from these ‘ideal’ prototypes. Therefore, the ultimate origins of the heraldic menagerie are perhaps not to be found in the plasma of blood, but in that of the earth’s ionosphere.
