The big solar flare and coronal mass ejection earlier this week created an unusual event on the Sun: it rained. Not water drops of course, but coronal rain. After the eruption, blobs of plasma fell back to the surface of the Sun, sometimes making ‘splashes’ where they hit. Coronal rain is plasma gas that condenses in the corona and then descends back to the surface. It has long been a mystery and its motion has perplexed solar physicists. For some reason, coronal rain falls much slower than is expected for plasma falling due to the huge gravitational pull of the Sun. Many times, rather than falling straight down — as it would if gravity was the only force pulling on it — the plasma rain follows invisible magnetic field lines, which can be detected by instruments on board watchful spacecraft.

This video was produced from data from the Solar Optical Telescope on NASA/JAXA’s Hinode spacecraft of the big M1/7 class flare that erupted on April 16 from Active Region 1461. Scientists say thanks to spacecraft like Hinode and the Solar Dynamic Observatory, this phenomenon can be studied in much more detail so that they can better understand this unusual event.

Sun Polar Shift Zonne-poolverschuiving volgende maand, mei 2012???

Van het Japanse HINODE team: Binnen ongeveer een maand tijd (mei 2012) zal de zonne-noordpool "nul" worden, en zich vormen in MEERDERE positieve polen. Dit gebeurt echter een jaar eerder dan verwacht en kán gevolgen hebben voor het klimaat.

Japanse onderzoekers denken dat de zon een periode van ongebruikelijke magnetische veranderingen kan brengen, die kunnen leiden tot het intreden van lagere temperaturen op aarde.
Volgens wetenschappers van het National Astronomical Observatory van Japan en de Riken Research Foundation lijkt de huidige zonnevlekken activiteit op een periode in de 17e eeuw, bekend als het Maunder Minimum, het koudste gedeelte van de Kleine IJstijd.
Tijdens die 70-jaar bevroor de Londense rivier de Theems, en kersenbloesems in Kyoto bloeiden later dan gebruikelijk. Temperaturen worden geschat op ongeveer 2,5 graden lager te zijn geweest tijdens het Maunder Minimum dan in de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw.

Ongewone magnetische veranderingen
De onderzoekers vonden ook tekenen van ongewone magnetische veranderingen in de zon, waardoor ze geloven, dat de magnetische veld polariteit van de zonne-polen zal omkeren en zelfs quadri-polair worden in mei. Dit betekent dat er dan 2 Noordpolen op de zon zijn. Een onderzoeksteam onder leiding van Saku Tsuneta, een professor aan de Observatory, bevestigt dat de polariteit van het magnetisch veld van de Noordpool op de zon begon te keren in juli vorig jaar. Echter, het magnetisch veld op de Zuidpool, die werd verwacht mee te draaien met de Noordpool, bleef een positieve polariteit behouden, waardoor de onderzoekers denken dat dit tot de vorming van een vier-polige magnetische structuur zal leiden met twee nieuwe polen in de buurt van de evenaar van de zon. Het onderzoeksteam denkt dat dit quadri-polaire patroon ook in de 17e-18e eeuw ontstond.
De oorzaak achter de verschuivingen in polaire velden van de zon wordt echter tot op heden niet begrepen.

Een zonne-pool verschuiving, een polaire omkering op de zon, zal plaatsvinden in 2012. Dit is echter niet ongebruikelijk; het gebeurt om de 11 jaar, en de omkering vindt plaats rond het zonne-maximum, die naar verwachting zal plaatsvinden rond mei 2013 (NOAA). Echter, deze keer gebeurt de omkering dus na 10 jaar!

AMSTERDAM - In de vroege ochtend van 6 juni schuift de planeet Venus als een donker stipje voor de zon langs.

Dat zeldzame hemelverschijnsel, dat maar ongeveer twee keer per eeuw optreedt - en dan vrij kort achter elkaar, zal niet alleen door duizenden (amateur)astronomen op aarde worden gevolgd, maar ook door de Hubble-ruimtetelescoop.

Dat gaat echter niet zomaar: de gevoelige ruimtetelescoop, juist gebouwd om de allerzwakste objecten te detecteren, kan namelijk niet rechtstreeks op de zon worden gericht.

In plaats daarvan zal Hubble naar het sterk verzwakte zonlicht kijken zoals dat door de maan wordt weerkaatst. Hoofddoel van deze onderneming is de detectie van de sporen die Venus in het zonlicht achterlaat.

Venusovergang
Tijdens de Venusovergang gaat namelijk één honderdduizendste deel van het zonlicht door de atmosfeer van de planeet voordat het bij de maan aankomt. En dat zou in minuscule 'vingerafdrukken' in het spectrum van het door de maan weerkaatste zonlicht moeten resulteren. Nu is allang bekend wat de samenstelling van de Venusatmosfeer is.

Dat is dan ook niet het doel van de meting: astronomen zijn vooral benieuwd of de spectrale sporen van Venus, die ongeveer net zo groot is als onze aarde, überhaupt waarneembaar zijn in het licht van de zon. In de toekomst zal op vergelijkbare wijze worden geprobeerd om de atmosferische vingerafdrukken waar te nemen van verre, aarde-achtige planeten die van ons uit gezien voor hun moederster langs schuiven.

Tijdens de Venusovergang zal de ruimtetelescoop zeven uur lang op de maankrater Tycho zijn gericht. Een groot deel van deze waarneemtijd gaat overigens verloren, omdat de maan elk anderhalf uur - de omlooptijd van Hubble - door de aarde wordt 'verduisterd'.
