One of Nasa’s retired space shuttles has made a dramatic flypast over the centre of the US capital on the way to its final resting place in a museum.

Discovery flew over the monuments along the National Mall in Washington DC at about 10:00 EST (14:00 GMT).

Piggy-backing on a modified Boeing 747, Discovery was flying at an altitude of about 1,500ft (457m), Nasa said.

The shuttle programme ended in 2011. Discovery will be on show at the Air and Space Museum in Virginia.

After circling four times over the Washington Monument, and passing the National Mall over Capitol Hill, the shuttle landed at Dulles Airport, a few miles outside Washington DC.

From there it will be towed to the nearby Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, where it will be on permanent display.

During the flypast, onlookers lined the roofs of the capital’s buildings and the route to the airport, wanting to catch a glimpse of the shuttle.

Earlier, crowds of onlookers gathered along the Florida shoreline as dawn broke on Tuesday to see the shuttle take off from Kennedy Space Center.

Cheers broke out from the estimated 2,000-strong crowd as the aircraft left the runway, the Associated Press reported.

Dozens of former shuttle workers and Nasa veterans were reported to be among the onlookers.

Discovery then passed low over a packed beach and made one final turn back over the runway at the space complex before climbing towards a cruising altitude.

The aircraft’s fuselage was illuminated by the early Florida sunshine for moments before it headed out of sight on its journey up the East Coast.
Fleet leader

In Washington, would-be shuttle-watchers gathered on the National Mall, the two-mile-long public park running through the heart of the city, for a prime view of the mid-morning flyover.

Discovery descended to 1,500ft and was visible over the city’s Waterfront area, the Mall, and near the Jefferson Memorial.

The flypast was also expected to delight onlookers at a regular plane-spotting haunt, Gravelly Point Park, just outside the city limits in Virginia.

Discovery’s final destination is an annex of the Smithsonian Institute’s National Air and Space Museum, situated in Virginia, close to Dulles, the main international airport serving Washington DC.

It will replace Enterprise – the prototype shuttle – which is moving on to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City later this year.

Endeavour, the third shuttle heading to a museum this year, is destined for the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Retired General Jack Dailey, the National Air & Space Museum director, told the Associated Press “we pledge to take care of her forever”, adding the shuttle will show young visitors “what America is capable of”.

Sorena Sorenson, a geology curator for the Smithsonian Institution, was among thousands watching.

“This to me is just so bittersweet,” she said.

Discovery was the most-used of the shuttle fleet, flying 39 missions, and was designated the fleet leader.

The shuttle fleet was decommissioned and the programme wound up in 2011, after 30 years in action, when construction was completed on the International Space Station.

Retirement of Nasa’s iconic shuttle fleet was ordered by the US government, in part due to the high cost of maintaining the ships.

The decision leaves the country with no means of putting astronauts in orbit.

Nasa astronauts will hitch rides on Russian Soyuz craft in the near future to get to the International Space Station.

Private US companies are hoping to pick up where the shuttles left off, beginning with space station cargo.

The first run, by Space Exploration Technologies Corp, is set to take place in a few weeks.

Hermann Nitsch’s controversial ceremonial performances have always appealed to the younger generations, who want to go beyond acceptable ethical limits and feel strong emotions. The Austrian esthetic, which he and others started fifty years ago, has spread out across the globe and is still influencing artistic trends today: think of Damien Hirst’s cow heads or Mike Kelley’s.performances.

Nitsch's latest version of the famous Orgie Mysteries Theatre Festival, based on Richard Wagner’s Parzifal, will be held from Saturday, July 31st to Monday August 2nd, 2004 at Prinzendorf castle, making it four days shorter than the 6-day edition in 1998.
The Austrian activist Hermann Nitsch developed the concept of the Orgien Mysterien Theater in the late 1950s, a life-affirming work of Performance Art, encompassing all artistic forms, to awaken the senses. However, Nitsch’s work is not considered disturbing anymore and he is tired of being called a murderer and an animal slaughterer. The bull slaughtering and bloody atrocities now take place behind the scenes, like in a Greek tragedy.

This will be good news for Brigitte Bardot, who in 1998, together with animal rights activists, picketed the six-day Nitsch extravaganza. In his defence, Nitsch would say that if you can get over the initial shock and look beyond the blood and gore, you will see that it is simply a demonstration of how animals are murdered every day for meat. Birth and death - day and night - quietness and chaos - blood and wine, all are omnipresent themes emerging in Nitsch’s painting, music and theatre.
A new Nitsch publication accompanies the festival, taking the readers through his world of taste, smell, sound, colours, and fantasy. It contains illustrative drawings on religion, philosophy and psychology. He has also composed numerous theoretical writings, poetry, and musical compositions and taken numerous photographs to accompany over 120 action performances. Music has always played an important role in his artwork, particularly the tragic Dionysian slaughter music. At the festival the spectator will overwhelmed by processions, foot washing, spilling of blood and carcasses of farm animals over mock-crucified bodies, the crushing of grapes: 120 actions focused on the theme of the Grail.

Vandaag kreeg ik weer een 'nieuw' boek binnen, en wellicht een van mn mooiste. Ik zag op internet, voor een prikje, het boek van P. Hall - Secret Teachings Of All Ages voorbij komen. Ik verwachte er niet heel veel van en, zoals gewoonlijk als je er niet veel van verwacht, was ik compleet verrast met dit werkelijk schitterende werk!!! Het boek is trouwens ook aardig 'groot'.

Het past ook prima in de serie rondom dit mysterie topic, het sluit er werkelijk per-fect op aan!

Het boek is prachtig geillustreerd met fenomenale foto's, hieronder een aantal pagina's.

01 - De appels der Hesperiden



Binnenplaats Gemeentehuis Bannehof 1: Nic Jonk (1928 – 1994), 1978, brons, ca. 3 meter.Vroeger - meer dan 2000 jaar geleden - geloofden de Grieken in veel goden, halfgoden en andere wonderlijke wezens. Zo had je de god van de oorlog (Ares), van de liefde (Afrodite), van de jacht (Artemis) enz. Ze woonden met zijn allen op de Olympus, de godenberg. Zeus, de oppergod, was de baas. De Griekse mythologie (de verzameling mythen of fantasieverhalen) heeft een schat aan onderwerpen opgeleverd. Nic Jonk heeft er vaak uit geput. Van die wonderlijke wezens, titanen, cyclopen, amazones, heeft hij deze keer de Hesperiden gekozen om er een beeld over te maken. Het verhaal is prachtig. Luister. Moeder Aarde had een boom aan Hera gegeven, waaraan gouden appels groeiden. De Hesperiden, de 'Dochters van de Nacht', moesten ervoor zorgen. En Herakles, de Griekse held, had als opdracht om drie gouden appels te stelen.…. Een prachtig onderwerp, volkomen fantasie. Dus ideaal om er een beeld van te maken. Een vrouwenfiguur rent naast een lage dikke boom die er sprookjesachtig uitziet. Een korte ronde stam met vreemde vertakkingen die eindigen in een bol en die ongemerkt overgaan in wolkenvormen en het lichaam van de vrouw. Van één kant gezien lijkt het beeld zelfs helemaal abstract! Een werveling van ronde en bolle vormen, die elk moment van vorm lijken te kunnen veranderen. Wegens verhuizing van het gemeentehuis is het beeld in augustus 2011 verwijderd. Het beeld wordt opnieuw geplaatst op de rotonde in de John Lennonstraat, eerst moeten daar de kabels in de grond worden omgelegd. Tot op heden is dat nog niet gedaan.

07 - De beeldentuin



Lagedijk 39 voor het Weefhuis :De vijf zandstenen beelden op hardstenen voetstukken in de Beeldentuin stellen voor Bacchus, Morgen, Middag, Avond en Nacht. Door de Zaandijkse koopman Claas Adriaansz Honig werden de beelden op een veiling in Zaandam zijn gekocht.De beelden stellen ook Bacchus, Ochtend, Avond, Middag en Nacht voor. Ze komen uit de Tuin van Vermaak bij het Huis van Polanen in Halfweg, het eerste huis daar. En verhuisden in oktober 1804 naar de tuin van Grietje Jans Haremaker. In 1804 liet Honig de beelden naar Zaandijk overbrengen. De Beeldentuin is altijd een 'Zaans pronkjuweel' gebleven, zowel in de lente (links boven), zomer (rechts boven), winter (rechts onder) als herfst (links onder). Ze werden vervaardigd in een Italiaanse Steenhouwerij.

Wij ervaren veelal een afbeelding van een penis als lustobject. In Bhutan kijkt men daar op een hele andere manier tegen aan.



In Bhutan is de penis geen lustobject doch een esoterisch symbool afkomstig uit het Lhakhang
abdij, dichtbij Panakha, de voormalige hoofdstad van Bhutan.

Deze abdij was gebouwd ter ere van Lama Drukpa Kunley die rond de 16e eeuw leefde. Deze man was bekend als de ´gekke heilige´ en als de ´heilige gekke man.´

De man hield er nogal wat onorthodoxe manieren op na, op het gebied van lesgeven.



Via zijn leringen werd de penis dus als esoterisch symbool gezien.

Ondanks deze verwijzing zijn er ook bronnen die aangeven dat de phallus verering afkomstig is vanuit de Bön traditie, een onorthodoxe vorm van religie, een animistische en sjamanistische religie, welke al voor het boeddhisme bestond en waar de phalles een integraal symbool was in de rituelen.
In Bhutan vereren ze dus de penis.

Dit beeld is zo verweven met de mensen daar dat het een goed gebruik is de huizen te beschilderen met phallussymbolen om de boze geesten af te weren.
Het mannelijk lid weert namelijk alle boze geesten en beschermt de mensen die in het huis wonen,tegen ruzie.


Wil je je huis echt helemaal tip top in orde, en geestenvrij houden dan is het penisritueel uit Bhutan zeker een aanrader.



In Bhutan is een house-warming ceremonie voor nieuwe huizen. Op iedere vier hoeken van het huis wordt een fallus in erectie geplaatst. Deze penissen worden gemaakt uit het hout van de daknok en bevestigd op de vier kardinale hoeken van het huis. Ze worden in een mand gelegd, welke door de mannen omhoog getakeld worden; vrouwen proberen de mand echter tegelijkertijd naar beneden te trekken. Tijdens dit ritueel worden er fallische liederen gezongen.
